Many religious traditions teach that some form of spiritual essence or consciousness exists in a physical body and then continues on after death, perhaps to return for another bodily cycle. And yet, with all our scientific research, we have no material evidence of the existence of such a soul, no evidence of one entering or leaving a body, no tested theory about its mechanism or means, and no evidence of its supposed immortality. How do we explain that?
Christian Science teaches that Soul is God, Spirit, so Soul must be spiritual and eternal because God is. Also, there can be only one Soul because there is only one God. The belief of many souls is as implausible as the belief in many gods. The First Commandment says, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3).
This week’s Bible lesson in the “Christian Science Quarterly” on the subject “Soul and Body” identifies some key ideas to help us better understand how Christian Science approaches these concepts in a unique and spiritually scientific way.
The Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”: “Soul and Spirit being one, God and Soul are one, and this one never included in a limited mind or a limited body” (p. 335). And: “Man is not a material habitation for Soul; he is himself spiritual” (p. 477). What animates us, therefore, is not an internal, personal soul, but the endless reflection of an infinite, eternal, all-encompassing God.
Human birth and death have nothing to do with man’s spiritual, eternal life, created and maintained by Soul, God. Death cannot be the avenue for spiritual paradise, because as God’s creation we forever exist in His perfection. Understanding Soul helps free us from a fear of death, enables us to celebrate our immortality, and heals.
Christ Jesus fed a multitude of people with just five loaves and two fishes – something that would have been impossible if he had been relying on the minimal physical resources at hand. But it was entirely natural to the thought filled with the understanding of God as Soul. Such healing works are only possible because there is one infinite Soul that we all reflect, which could never be confined to a human body. We, too, can be fed and healed through realizing the power of Soul, and understanding that we reflect Soul.
Cherishing that thought healed me of a skin disease that had been steadily spreading. A family doctor examined me and said there was no known cure for this condition, and it was something I’d just have to live with. He provided some hygienic guidance, but it proved to be useless.
Then one night I prayed, thinking very deeply about God as my Father-Mother. I felt warmed by the thought that my spiritual Parent loves me infinitely, and that as a child of God, I reflect His spiritual perfection, which can’t be contained or suffer within a human body. The next morning I awoke to find that the affected skin had very naturally fallen away and given place to completely clean, fresh skin. And that was the end of the problem.
The Bible says, “Thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning” (Job 11:17). The more we understand God as Soul, the more we will see, as I did, the reality and power of these words.

O poder sanador da Alma

Muitas tradições religiosas ensinam que existe, no corpo físico, alguma forma de essência espiritual ou consciência, que continua após a morte, talvez para retornar a um novo ciclo no corpo. No entanto, apesar de toda a pesquisa científica, não temos nenhuma prova material da existência dessa alma, nenhuma evidência de uma alma entrando ou saindo de um corpo, nenhuma teoria comprovada a respeito de seu mecanismo ou forma de atuação, e nenhuma evidência de sua suposta imortalidade. Como explicamos isso?
A Ciência Cristã ensina que a Alma é Deus, o Espírito, portanto a Alma tem de ser espiritual e eterna porque Deus é espiritual e eterno. Além disso, só pode haver uma Alma pois há um só Deus. A crença na existência de muitas almas seria como acreditar na existência de muitos deuses. O Primeiro Mandamento diz: “Não terás outros deuses diante de mim” (Êxodo 20:3).
A Lição Bíblica desta semana, a qual consta do Livrete Trimestral da Ciência Cristã, com o tema “A Alma e o corpo”, identifica algumas ideias fundamentais para nos ajudar a melhor compreender como a Ciência Cristã aborda esses conceitos de uma maneira única e espiritualmente científica.
A Fundadora da Ciência Cristã, Mary Baker Eddy, escreveu em “Ciência e Saúde com a Chave das Escrituras”: “Visto que a Alma e o Espírito são um, Deus e a Alma são um, e esse um nunca está contido em uma mente limitada ou em um corpo limitado” (p. 335). Também escreveu: “O homem não é uma habitação material para a Alma; ele mesmo é espiritual” (p. 477). O que nos vivifica, portanto, não é uma alma pessoal dentro de nós, mas sim o reflexo infinito de um Deus infinito, eterno e todo-abrangente.
O nascimento e a morte humana não têm nada a ver com a vida eterna espiritual do homem criado e mantido pela Alma, Deus. A morte não pode ser o caminho para o paraíso espiritual porque, sendo a criação de Deus, nós existimos para sempre em Sua perfeição. Compreender a Alma ajuda a nos libertar do medo da morte, permite-nos celebrar nossa imortalidade e traz cura.
Cristo Jesus alimentou uma multidão com apenas cinco pães e dois peixes — algo que teria sido impossível, caso ele tivesse contado com os escassos recursos físicos disponíveis. Contudo isso foi totalmente natural para o pensamento imbuído da compreensão de que Deus é a Alma. Essas obras de cura somente são possíveis porque existe uma só Alma infinita que todos nós refletimos e que não poderia ficar confinada em um corpo humano. Nós também podemos ser alimentados e curados ao reconhecermos o poder da Alma e compreendermos que refletimos a Alma.
Essa compreensão me curou de um problema de pele que vinha se espalhando pelo corpo todo. Um clínico geral me examinou e disse que não havia cura conhecida para esse problema, que era algo com o qual eu teria de aprender a conviver. Ele me deu algumas orientações de higiene, mas elas se mostraram inúteis.
Então, certa noite eu orei, ponderando profundamente que Deus é meu Pai e Mãe. Senti-me encorajado pelo pensamento de que meu Progenitor espiritual me ama infinitamente e que, por eu ser Seu filho, reflito Sua perfeição espiritual, que não pode ser contida em um corpo humano ou nele sofrer. Na manhã seguinte, acordei e percebi que a pele afetada havia caído naturalmente, dando lugar a uma pele completamente renovada e limpa. E esse foi o fim do problema.
A Bíblia diz: “A tua vida será mais clara que o meio-dia; ainda que lhe haja trevas, serão como a manhã” (Jó 11:17). Quanto mais compreendemos que Deus é a Alma, mais vemos, como eu vi, a realidade e o poder dessas palavras.
