“We cannot remain silent”: UISG to hold global prayer for peace

The International Union of Superiors General (UISG) calls for “prayer, fasting, and action for an unarmed and disarming peace” to take place on Friday, March 6, at 3:30 pm (Rome time). The event will be livestreamed and open to the faithful and all people of goodwill.

Vatican News

The organization representing more than 1,900 congregations of consecrated women religious present on six continents has convened an international moment of prayer for Friday, March 6, at 3:30 pm (Rome time), to be livestreamed and open to the faithful and all people of goodwill. The announcement by the International Union of Superiors General (UISG) comes at a time numerous regions in the world are facing escalating violence and war.

In a statement released on March 4, Sr. Roxanne Schares, SSND, Executive Secretary of UISG, declared that “as consecrated women religious, present in the most fragile contexts of society and close to those who suffer, we cannot remain silent in the face of a spiral of destruction that undermines human dignity and jeopardizes the future of new generations.”

Working for peace

Repeating words of Pope Leo XIV spoken during the Angelus last July, UISG underscored that “Peace is a desire of all peoples, and it is the sorrowful cry of those torn apart by war” and calls on all to “ask the Lord to touch the hearts and inspire the minds of those who govern, that the violence of weapons be replaced by the pursuit of dialogue.”

The UISG statement recalled how its members, the thousands of women religious around the world, are often present in these “‘existential’ and geographical peripheries where the roar of weapons drowns out every other voice” living alongside and accompanying “refugees, the wounded, and devastated families” who “daily bear witness that peace is not an abstraction, but a fundamental human need denied to millions.”

A global invitation

The UISG invites all people of goodwill to this global call to prayer, fasting, and action for peace. The moment will be livestreamed, bringing together religious communities from every continent, all united beyond borders and cultures. The statement concludes, “We entrust to our loving, compassionate God the victims of all conflicts and war, implore the gift of courage for us to become artisans of peace, and reaffirm our commitment to walk together beyond borders with all our sisters and brothers so the world may truly become a home for all.”
