Jesus’ words, “Have salt in
yourselves,”* engage me.
Prosaic salt – my thought
goes to easy spills, to the
unwelcome dish demise from
exuberant over-sprinkling.
But then there’s salt – crucial,
valued, integral – a biblical-era
purifying, preserving must-have;
an enduring spiritual symbol far
beyond the everyday request
to “pass the salt.”
Perhaps we are to bring to the
table vital, heavenly salt within
– offering our precious, pure,
spiritual nature, the image of our
creator, Spirit; the salt that tenderly
touches the weave of kindliness,
of fellowship, safeguarding its
unraveling; that cleanses the
contentious sense with gracious,
divine goodness; that turns
despair into seasoned promise
with the zest of God-given joy.
From its infinitely mighty source,
often a pinch is enough.
