The Scriptures reveal God as divine Truth – unerring, immutable, infinite, and ever active. We could say that the Bible is an indelible record of the operation of Truth in the lives of men and women.
The teachings of Christian Science name Truth as a synonym for God, along with Life and Love and several other synonyms revealing the completeness of God, our creator. The true, spiritual identity of each man and woman reflects Truth in the expression of qualities such as honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness.
The Bible lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly for January 19-25, 2026, explores the nature and activity of God as Truth. Operating as divine and immutable spiritual law, Truth governs every one of us.
A family member employed by a financial institution was accused of misconduct in placing valuable documents in an unsafe place. In fact, the family member was not in the building when this incident occurred. A manager’s investigation confirmed the family member’s inculpability. Another staff member owned up, and the issue was swiftly resolved. One might say that the truth, or reality, of that particular event was uncovered and justice was served.
Justice is an expression of Truth, not just an expression of human law meted out by courtroom judges. True justice is impelled by divine law, the operation of divine Truth. This verse from Psalms in the Responsive Reading of the Bible lesson affirms that justice emanates from God: “Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face” (Psalms 89:14).
The Bible lesson also includes part of the account of Christ Jesus healing a woman with a “spirit of infirmity” (see Luke 13:11-17). Although the woman’s predicament was unjust, Jesus was not perturbed by the evidence of the physical senses. He perceived that this woman’s true, entirely spiritual identity was unrestricted, whole, and sound. Jesus’ understanding of spiritual reality – the reality of each of us, as created and maintained by God – led to the woman’s immediate freedom from infirmity.
This illustrates, in regard to sickness and disease, something that Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, states in “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”: “Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihilation to everything unlike themselves, because they declare nothing except God” (p. 243). What are some of the other errors that Truth annihilates? They might include fear, dishonesty, injustice, corruption, or immorality.
In the United Kingdom, the Post Office Horizon scandal involved wrongful prosecution of sub-postmasters due to faulty software. This took place between 1999 and 2015. In 2017 a group of sub-postmasters filed a lawsuit against the Post Office.
When I first became aware of this lawsuit, I was surprised and dismayed at the evidence of apparent injustice. Yet, as I prayed to know how to respond to this situation as a concerned citizen, it became clear that this was an opportunity to witness divine Truth in action – uncovering malfeasance and revealing the reality and authority of righteous judgment and divine justice.
The legal process was complex and protracted, but as each stage unfolded, it was evident that divine Truth was operating. In 2024 the UK Parliament passed a law overturning the unjust convictions of the sub-postmasters. Financial compensation is being paid to those who were victims of the wrongful prosecution.
The Bible reveals that divine Truth’s law operates impartially and universally, and it transforms, liberates, and restores. Day by day, we can bear witness to the spiritual qualities of Truth in our own lives – and to the vitality and efficacy of Truth, operating everywhere and embracing everyone.
