An international summit aimed at finalizing a peace agreement to end the war in Gaza is set to take place Monday in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and U.S. President Donald Trump will co-chair the meeting, which is expected to draw leaders from more than 20 countries.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is also scheduled to attend.
The summit will focus on ending hostilities in the Gaza Strip, advancing regional peace efforts, and ushering in a new phase of security and stability across the Middle East.
A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas went into effect Friday following three days of intensive negotiations. The talks were mediated by Egypt, Qatar, Türkiye and the United States.
The first phase of the agreement includes the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza City, Rafah, Khan Younis and northern Gaza, the opening of five aid crossings, and the release of hostages and prisoners.
Meanwhile, Egypt has begun dispatching emergency food and medical supplies to Gaza, as displaced Palestinians have started returning north from the southern part of the enclave after the Israeli military announced that civilians could travel along Rashid Road and Salah al-Din Road.
Despite the cease-fire, Israeli forces will remain in Gaza to maintain pressure on Hamas until the group disarms and the territory is demilitarized.
Over the weekend, Gaza’s Civil Defense said it had received reports of 9,500 missing persons since the conflict began in 2023.
A Civil Defense spokesperson called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to coordinate with Israeli authorities to help determine their fate.
According to Gaza’s health authorities, more than two years of Israeli military operations have killed over 67,000 people and triggered widespread famine across the territory.
