Cameroon releases official Papal Visit anthem: Terre de l’Alliance

The countdown has begun: From 15 to 18 April 2026, Pope Leo XIV will set foot on Cameroonian soil. Catholics and all people of goodwill eagerly await the Holy Father. This week, Cameroon released a catchy official Papal Visit anthem, “Terre de l’Alliance (Land of the Covenant).”

Liliane Mugombozi – Yaoundé

Beyond the music, the Cameroonian Bishops’ Conference is helping the faithful prepare for this Apostolic Visit. They have organised various spiritual activities across the country. The enthusiasm is palpable. Preparations are well underway to give the Holy Father a warm welcome to Africa.

Papal welcome song

“Leo XIV, Pastor of Peace, Welcome to the land of Cameroon!

Christ brings us together; the Spirit guides us.

Together, let us walk towards the Light!” These are the words of the refrain of “Terre de l’Alliance.”

As the official anthem for Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Visit, Terre de l’Alliance captures the spirit of this milestone and occasion.

Features of the Song

Title: Terre de l’Alliance (Land of the Covenant)

Authors: Fr. Simplice Vladimir Bidzanga (Text) with Dr Rosny Frédéric M. Mbida (Music)

Languages: French, English, Ewondo, Duala, Fulfulde, Oku, Maka, and others.

Themes: Peace, Unity, the Successor of Peter, and the “Covenant” with God.

Musical Style: Fusion of traditional Cameroonian rhythms and Western classical choral music.

“The selection of a four-part mixed choir firmly situates the composition within a classical framework. However, this structure is soon infused with rhythms, pauses, and dynamics that resonate with the sounds of Cameroon,” said Fr. Vladimir.

He continued, “From the Wouri to the Mandara, and from the Sanaga to the prominent cities, the land transforms into more than just a setting: it takes on the role of a key player. The nation is invoked as a faithful entity. This is not a political agenda. Rather, it embodies a national vision put into song.”

Faith, Church and Mission

Above all, the text speaks of the Church. It speaks of faith. It speaks of mission -the Church is sent to all people, spanning all nations and cultures, fulfilling the mandate to “make disciples of all nations. Fr. Vladimir affirms: “for instance the phrase, ‘You are Petrus’ is a profound call to us, the Holy Father, the sign of our unity is coming among us as a Father, as a pilgrim of peace in our land of ‘covenant’, that is to say, a land of our common responsibility.”

A song for unity in diversity

Unity is regarded as a fundamental vocation of the Church in Cameroon, operating as a spiritual, social, and prophetic imperative in a country marked by cultural, linguistic, and regional diversity, as well as ongoing conflict.  The words and the melody resonate with this vocation: the Church is called to be a “sign of unity” in a divided society, bridging gaps among all divides.

Leo XIV, torchbearer of hope

The Pope’s visit will strongly remind the nation of the Church’s nature as an inclusive faith intended for all people across cultures, languages and time.

A passage says:

Under the benevolent gaze of the Creator.

From the Sanaga to the peaks of Mount Mandara,

Our hands join together in a single prayer.

O sese, O mulemamwambemwaloba!  (O joy, the heart is the gateway to God!)

Nwilëgha, mbuondzwi! (God is here, peace is here!)

Leo XIV, torchbearer of hope,

Let the glory of His face shine upon us.

Further highlighting the anthem’s message, Fr Vladimir said, “This is not merely a recognition of culture. It acts as a proclamation. In a country divided by linguistic and identity differences, this anthem conveys a clear message: Unity is realised not through uniformity, but through harmony. Each language joins as a voice in a choir. None prevails. None is diminished to mere folklore. All participate in the same crescendo.”

Fr. Simplice Vladimir Bidzanga concludes: “Here we discover ourselves within a deeply ecclesial reasoning: a Church that communicates in all languages while maintaining a singular faith.”

Yes, indeed, Holy Father, we are deeply grateful for your coming!

Under your pastoral staff we walk,

United in faith in the Risen One;

May Yaoundé, Bamenda and Douala

Become the gathering place of nations.

Leo XIV, Pastor of Peace, Welcome to the land of Cameroon!
