These top ten songs may or may not be your jam, but they remind us that worship has the immense and beautiful power to reorient the soul. Singing truth, even when feelings lag behind our faith, can actually strengthen us in the storm and prepare us for the future.
Just like Paul and Silas singing from a prison cell (Acts 16), we’re encouraged to give a mighty shout to the loud, no matter where we are or what we’re experiencing. This isn’t an invalidation of what we’re feeling, but the ability to tell God our circumstances, and then tell our circumstances who our God is.
If you’re looking for a new and fresh way to use worship intentionally this next year, look no further than some lessons from the Psalms:
-Learn to lament. Express how you’re really feeling to God and cry out.
-Begin your morning by playing a worship song while you get ready. Sing out loud your praises to Jesus.
-Worship during times of anxiety. I know this is hard, but worship, even if all you can say is “Lord, help.”
-Make it a practice to worship as a family. Designate times to worship together through song, or remember that while music is wonderful, worship can be anything we do to bring glory and honor to God.
A Prayer to Prepare Our Hearts for Worship
Dear Jesus,
While worship doesn’t change our circumstances, it does change our posture. Teach us how to worship you today in body, mind, and spirit, and bless the year ahead, no matter what it looks like. Teach us to look to you in times of abundance and need, knowing you are with us always. We love, praise, and thank you, Jesus.
